people are proposing a 48-hour tumblr blackout inspired by the reddit strike and like

y'all, the reddit strike is based on the fact that reddit has volunteer mods who are behind it, and it looks like even with that leverage it just isn't gonna fucking work because the ceo is too desperate to get profit by any means necessary

...what are they even proposing the blackout be about? With Reddit, there's a relatively-clear "there's this specific Upcoming Update We Disapprove Of which we want you to not go through with"-shaped goal; with tumblr, there's... abstract diffuse annoyance at recent UI updates like login-walling and more-difficult reblog-chain-traversal, I guess? Worry that they're going to try to get rid of blog themes? It doesn't seem like there's really much in the way of concrete easy-to-coordinate-over demands-a-blackout-might-help-push-towards, on tumblr, the way there is on Reddit. Or is the idea more "well, they're doing it, and it looks cool and fun, so we want to do it too", without that sort of larger goal behind it?

Broad-spectrum irritation about the mobile app sucking, is our understanding. Breaking reblog chains was mentioned, the pushing of Tumblr Live which nobody wants, changing the default dash view to algorithmic instead of chronological for new accounts. The image viewer is apparently worse.

And the usual "do something about the porn bots, I know you have a 'ban all porn bots immediately' button that you're simply refusing to push for no adequately explored reason" thing.

we couldn't pull enough of a strike for the porn ban and they think they'll get enough people to sign on for *this*?

Exactly all this. Tumblr is gonna do what Tumblr is gonna do. Not spending money on the store or on blazing posts is a more effective protest than a 48-hour blackout. And we've done the blackout thing before, it accomplished nothing. I'm not going to stop using a service I enjoy when it's not going to accomplish anything.
