Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page

So, I skipped the last challenge because I couldn't come up with anything to say to any fandom or the concept of fandom in general (possibly because I was very eepy. But anyways), and I didn't have it in me to publicly write a love letter to a fictional character. This challenge made me truly realize that "fandom" for me right now is just me, the voices in my head, and sometimes ghosts from fandom past when I'm looking at abandoned sites and stuff. The few sites I use don't have the feeds tailored to show the fictional things I like, partly because the fandoms are small/dead and partly because I wanted to curb my socmed addiction by not making my feed too fun. So I hope it's okay to go a bit off-script and instead link three sites I like, not ones I've actually been on recently:

http://femicom.org/ is a site dedicated to games aimed at girls (@^◡^) Worldwide joseimuke... It's really cutely designed, and I like looking at all the pictures and games I've never heard of before! I've never submitted a memory before since I played 0 girl games as a child, but if you have any you should try submitting something and see if they'll still put it on the site. I like reading what memories exist too.

https://popnmusicdatabase.neocities.org/ I love Pop'n Music!! What little I've gotten to play, at least. This site has a wonderful design just like the colorful games it's dedicated too, and has lots and lots of info. I still haven't gotten through it all. Please God let me one day live by a place with a Pop'n booth please I don't wanna have to play on emulated console anymore please please please

https://nar-nar.neocities.org/ I have mentioned Navarre Fire Emblem twice (x, x) on my humble blog. I'm rather fond of him and his look, but maybe more than that I appreciate the concept of Navarre. Thank you IntSys for coming up with Navarres. So, I really love this fansite filled with images of him and promises of more to come in the future. I love sites that are filled with pictures. I love pictures. This is why I prefer fanart and doujins and such over fanfic. Yayyy stimulation for my eyes yayyyy ⸜(*^ᗜ^*)⸝ ⸜(*^ᗜ^*)⸝ ⸜(*^ᗜ^*)⸝ わーいわーい

341/365: Kidderminster Town Hall and Rowland Hill statue
Click for a larger, sharper image

It's not that easy finding anything that isn't depressing in Kidderminster, which seems to fall apart a bit more every time I go. Post-industrial towns are often like that, and Kiddy is certainly one of those. The Town Hall, however, was built at a time when the place was thriving as a centre of the carpet industry. It's recently been refurbished, so it looks reasonable again. The statue is of Sir Rowland Hill (1795–1879) who was born in Kidderminster. He is probably best known today for having invented the adhesive postage stamp; the Penny Black's design is based on an idea by Hill.

Challenge #4: Rec Your Last Page

Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

Oh boy, do I have a lot I want to rec today!

Fiber Arts

Nerdopolis is a crafting challenge on Ravelry (a site for knitters, crocheters, weavers, and spinners). I've been playing in its tournaments since its inception, and we're now entering our 12th year! The premise is pretty simple: you get several themes each round, and need to make something that fits that theme.

To use my favorite example:

Say we had a challenge relating to architecture. I choose to knit a pink arch lace bookmark. I first tie it to the challenge by saying the lace in my bookmark looks like the St. Louis arch, then I get Nerd Cred by saying the pink color of my bookmark reminds me of the Aurore armor set from Final Fantasy XI, which is also pink. Since I play on Team Co-op which is related to games of all sorts, Final Fantasy XI (a video game) is part of my team’s scope.

Getting Nerd Cred enters you into a drawing for PRIZES! It's a lot of fun, and I do recommend it to anyone who crafts a lot and is looking for inspiration. Disclaimer: I am a moderator in the group because I am the captain of Team Co-op, plus also the Rogue Leader (rogues are individual players not playing on a team.)

[community profile] communal_creators is a group for ALL types of creativity, and runs a small challenge in the spring, with a larger challenge in the fall. We have writers, knitters, crocheters, weavers, bakers, vidders, kumihimo braiders, and more. It's a positive, friendly group full of people who love to cheer each other on.

KnittingHelp is a site I used a lot early in my knitting journey. I like it because the videos are clear and well-explained, AND she does both Continental and English knitting, which are the two major ways to knit (there are others). I'm a Continental knitter myself but can do English too, so it's been helpful to see those videos.

Planet June is a site for crocheters, especially those making stuffed toys. I love her invisible SC decrease! I've made a few of her patterns, and they are well written and clearly explained with enough photos for clarity without overindulging in them.

Pin Loom Weaving is a blog for those who weave on small looms such as the Zoom Loom or Weave-It. The blog's author has written some pattern books, too, and I've read one of them and was impressed. Pin Loom weaving is a fun way to get into weaving, and you can do some neat things with the squares.

Well first of all, happy new year! Let's hope this year is a good one, because i personally believe that some good things are going to be coming.

In my 2026 bingo (which i did not make) i didn't expect to get hyperfixated on danganronpa again. See the thing about danganronpa is that it's really good when you're 15 and under, but once you grow up you start to realize all the flaws and come to the conclusion that these games fucking suck. The only thing going for it is the character designs and the music, but the writing is a dumpster fire. But I must say, it's a very mesmerizing dumpster fire...I just cant look away!

Right now, I'm playing v3 on my phone. It was one of my favorite games when I was younger, and its still my favorite game in the series now. Which sucks, because it's the worst in the series from an objective standpoint. However, it personally has the best cast in the opinion. Yes, I'm only saying this because of Rantaro. What can I say, I'm in love with him!

Though I must say going into this game already knowing what's going to happen is kinda fun. But also painfully when I see that foreshadowing. The ominous shot put ball...

The Day Time Ended (1980) film poster
The Day Time Ended (1980)

A family move to a new, state-of-the-art (and weird-looking) home in the desert, but after a "triple supernova" is reported, strange things start happening. These involve weird pyramid thingies that glow green, UFOs in the sky, tiny and possibly malevolent aliens and – the highlight of the film – sub-Ray Harryhausen monstrous but somehow endearing stop-motion creatures of a vaguely reptilian shape. There are a couple of horses, which on the whole act better than the humans. Very little of this makes any sense, including the ending, though that is actually more interesting than the previous hour-plus. Director John "Bud" Cardos apparently considered this his worst film. He may have had a point. Half a star extra for the stop motion. ★½

It’s kind of wild that while the PC in chapter 5 of Runes of Pandemonium is busy dismantling slavery, she never makes a comment one way or another about the eugenics program that’s also going on. She does comment on the project to kidnap humans and turn them into robots, reluctantly admitting conversions should be voluntary even though turning humans into robots is her fetish, but she has no input on the project to breed smarter humans who’ll make for smarter robots than kidnapping some poor sap.

Reading a Pathfinder fic, and it does a good job of establishing how tribalism, religious conflict, and totalitarian governments lead to some races being viewed as “the bad ones” despite none being inherently evil.

Reading the reference materials it links to, and this shit sounds obscenely racist. “This volume offers an indispensable analysis of the most vicious killers of all – orcs. Born and bred for war, they are an awful, brutish, violent species and, despite their constant infighting and backstabbing, their horde armies remain a dire threat to all races.”

I am surmising that "Nadiri" means "Of Nadir". Yaybahar is the instrument, the artist is its inventor:
The name yaybahar (pronounced /jajba'har/) has Turkish origin. It is a composite of two words: yay means a "string" or a "coiled string" and bahar means the season "spring." According to Gorkem Sen, the name is derived from the idea of a new life or a new beginning. [1]
I assume this is the third one of its kind the artist has made.

Today was a pretty unexciting one, with just a little more snow but nothing of any real consequence. I had beans on toast for lunch, which isn't unexciting in itself – I like beans on toast – but it's hardly the most thrilling of meals! Nearing the end of my 365 now. Yes, there'll still be photos in future, just not every day. These houses were built to this design before the River Severn flood barriers were installed, so that the garage would get flooded if the river broke its banks but the living areas would not.

I try to do this once a year:

[personal profile] tommx posting in [community profile] addme
Name: Tom

Age: 58

I mostly post about: Day to day life, random thoughts, whatever I'm watching/reading, etc. It's more or less stream of consciousness, though I try to link certain items that I consider relevant; books, restaurants, significant locations, etc. In the past, I've used Amazon to link them, but as I have grown to really hate Jeff Bezos for what he's done to the Washington Post, I now use Barnes and Noble for book links.

My hobbies are: TTRPs (primarily Dungeons and Dragons), community theater, cooking, hiking, camping, wine collecting, computer programming (also my profession but I like to code for fun as well), writing, reading, building things, tinkering, drawing, and more things I generally have no actual time for.

My fandoms are: Star Trek, Doctor Who, Marvel (Silver Age), A Song of Ice and Fire, Remembrance of Earth's Past aka The Three Body Problem, et al. Some of my favorite authors include Douglas Adams, George R.R. Martin, James S. A. Corey, Tanith Lee, Michael Moorock, Brad Meltzer, John Steinbeck, and William Gibson. There are more, but that's who comes to mind.

I'm looking to meet people who: are basically cool and like to interact. I have a presence on other socials but I don't like using them because they either have become echo chambers, or are trying to push things on me in which I have no interest. I'm not looking to share memes and I have no interest in someone's OnlyFans page. I have nothing against people who have that sort of thing, but it doesn't interest me. I'd rather interact with someone who might want to discuss the Medici family of Renaissance Florence, or discuss the actual mechanics of LLMs rather than rant about how AI is going to destroy the world. Want to talk meaningfully about physics, archeology, musicology, mythology, literature, or the nature of consciousness? You might be someone I'd like to know.

My posting schedule tends to be: It's been kind of sporadic over the last year, but I'm looking to make a fresh start this year. I won't post daily, probably, but weekly at least.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: If you're MAGA, move on. I probably represent everything you hate, and I don't have time to educate people in a cult. I do not tolerate hate speech, homophobia, transphobia, incels, etc.

Before adding me, you should know: I'm an atheist for starters. I don't have a problem with people of faith, provided they don't try to rub my nose in it. I don't generally countenance evangelicals or fundamentalists, or anyone who feels the need to inject some performative demonstration of their supposed piety into literally every situation. I've known many people like this, and I lose patience with them very quickly.

I'm a 2 time cancer survivor. The last bout was diagnosed 4 years ago, and nearly killed me. I've written about some of the experience here, but may expand on it more in the future, now that I feel like I'm in a reasonably good headspace to think about what I went through.

I try to be polite and respectful of everyone with whom I interact. I expect the same from others. Slurs, insults, etc., are not tolerated. The basic rule of interacting with me: Don't be a dick. It's pretty much the closest thing I have to a philosophy of life.

Most of my journal is friends locked, but I'm happy to add people if they're interested. I've met some wonderful people here, and am always happy to meet more.

Once upon a time, one of the friends who was teaching me How To Person told me that my problem wasn't so much that people didn't like me, it was more that I didn't like people. I was constantly on the defensive and went into social situations expecting to get so little value out of the exchange that I was unconsciously treating people like their existence was a chore. He kinda had a point. It was not a great way to make friends when everyone around me felt judged.

I was still getting over that but starting to get used to trying to like people when I found fandom back in 2003-2004, and found my way over to [personal profile] copperbadge's comment section. It was the sudden manic insistence of my nervous system that I LOVE EVERYONE IN THIS BAR - just an overwhelming tide of positive feelings that I couldn't even process them all. I was still hella awkward as a human, but managed to make some neurodivergent friends anyway, some of whom I still talk to more than two decades later. And that insistence by my nervous system that These Are My People the feelings of I Belong Here and These People Are Like Me was so antithetical to every way that I had ever felt about groups of people that it wound up changing core parts of my personality, my identity.

I am me, because of y'all. You did this to me and I honestly couldn't be fucking happier about it.

[profile] dyingfire and [personal profile] maeritrae and [personal profile] elucreh - thank you so much for welcoming me aboard.
